Building Green

Our 2008 building projects include a "Green Demonstration Home" that will help us learn how to build affordable homes that will help our families be more financially sustainable in an era of increasing energy costs. It will also add to our knowledge of how to build in a way that helps the planet.

We are currently seeking sponsorships for this home for which we expect to break ground in June.

Volunteer architect David Quillin has developed a design concept for the home that optimizes the use of passive solar design. The nontraditional roof line provides maximum exposure to winter sun and, conversely, shade in summer months.

Joining David Quillin on the design team for this home are David Van der Vossen from Allen & Shariff, Dr. Joseph Arumala from UMES Department of Techology, Jill Barbon from the Eastern Shore Building Industry Association and Bill Lankford, chair of our Construction Committee.

This talented design team is now working on selecting materials and systems that are targeted to achieve a 30% reduction in monthly energy bills.

Contact us today to learn more about how you can make an investment in decent, affordable housing that's green.
