Habitat ReStore Open at New Salisbury Location

209 Davis Street – Habitat Home #54

This will be a new three-bedroom Habitat home for Shakira Henderson and her four-year-old daughter, Zyonah. Shakira works a full-time job at a local day care center and has already saved the $1,800 toward her closing costs and completed about half of her “sweat equity” hours, both requirements of her partnership with Habitat. Importantly, when the home is completed, she will become a homeowner with a no-interest, 30-year mortgage that Habitat holds, enabling us to build more homes for more families in need. These partnership requirements demonstrate the Habitat philosophy of offering hard-working, deserving families “a hand up, not a handout.”

Shakira and Zyonah will be the ninth Habitat family located within a two-block radius in the Church Street neighborhood of Salisbury. In addition to helping Shakira realize the dream of home ownership, we are contributing to the broader effort to revitalize this core-city neighborhood by increasing the number of homeowners.

Habitat homes are built largely with volunteers who are trained and supervised by our construction staff. The cost of materials and trades labor for each home is about $80,000. The lot for the Henderson home has been purchased and we are launching the funding phase to cover the building costs. We hope to have fundraising completed and to break ground by June 1 with completion projected by this fall.
