HABITAT NAMES NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Joan Mulvanny has been named executive director of Habitat for Humanity of Wicomico County. Mulvanny, who officially begins her position on June 1, was appointed by the Habitat affiliate’s board of directors after a national search.

“We are pleased to have found someone for the director's position with Joan's proven leadership ability and enthusiasm for the Habitat mission,” said Karen Bell, president of the Wicomico affiliate’s board of directors.

As a Christian housing ministry, Habitat for Humanity works in partnership with God and people of all faiths to make ownership of decent, affordable homes a matter of conscience and action.

“I am delighted to have the opportunity to work with the board, volunteers, homeowners and community to continue Habitat's important mission,” said Mulvanny. “Habitat not only enriches the lives of the homeowners and their families but improves the quality of life for all of us in Wicomico County. I am thrilled to be part of such a first-class organization."

Mulvanny was executive director of the Somerset County Local Management Board from 2009-10. That organization promotes a safe, healthy and stable environment for Somerset County children and families. She spent the previous five years as executive director of The Wellness Community (TWC)-Delmarva. TWC is a national non-profit organization dedicated to providing support and hope for people affected by cancer and their loved ones. Previously she held development and marketing positions for government and non-profit agencies in Illinois.

Mulvanny succeeds Interim Executive Director Barry King. “Joan arrives at an optimal time for the affiliate,” said King. “I’ve enjoyed my past five months as interim director, but it’s time for permanent leadership and Joan is well qualified to lead the organization to new heights.”

Habitat for Humanity of Wicomico County was founded in 1987; since then, the affiliate has built 53 homes locally. Through volunteer labor and tax-deductible donations of money and materials, Habitat builds and rehabilitates simple, decent homes with the help of the homeowner (partner) families. Habitat homes are sold to partner families at no profit, financed with affordable, no-interest loans. The homeowners' monthly mortgage payments come back to the affiliate to help build more homes for more families. The affiliate has also financed the building of 61 homes in Ghana West Africa through Habitat International's global building program.

Habitat’s offices are located at 908 W. Isabella St., just off Route 50, in Salisbury. Next door is the Habitat ReStore, which sells new and gently used building and home improvement materials, appliances, doors, windows, lighting fixtures, flooring and more. All items sold at the ReStore are donated and all proceeds benefit Habitat’s mission of providing decent affordable housing for sale to low income families in Wicomico County through no interest loans.
