Habitat receives grant for new ReStore heating system!
July 1, 2010

Habitat for Humanity of Wicomico County has been awarded a Maryland State EmPower Clean Energy Communities grant for $13,425  to install an energy efficient  heating system at its Isabella Street ReStore.

The purpose of the grant is to reduce energy demand, increase energy efficiency and encourage  the use of renewable energy resources.  “We will install a new infrared system that will save us more than $1,500 a year in energy costs,” explains Rota Knott, ReStore Manager. “We will direct the savings into building homes for low income families, and,  at the same time, we will create a more comfortable shopping environment for our customers.”

As a Christian based housing ministry, Habitat for Humanity works in partnership with God and people of all faiths to make ownership of decent affordable homes a matter of conscience and action.  The ReStore  raises funds to support Habitat’s mission by selling  new and gently used home improvement supplies, furniture and appliances at deeply discounted prices. The ReStore helps fund construction of Habitat homes and keeps usable items out of the landfill.

Volunteer Profile: Eldridge Hayman
June 23, 2010

If you’re a regular at Wicomico County’s ReStore, you’re probably well acquainted with the friendly face of volunteer Eldridge Hayman. Hayman, 65, of Salisbury, has been volunteering at the ReStore a few mornings each week for over three years. A retired UPS driver, Hayman is now a competent helper on the sales floor. Spending much of his free time at local hardware stores and auctions, Hayman has gained a firm background in the kinds of merchandise available at the ReStore, and is always more than happy to offer direction and advice to customers. More than anything, though, Hayman loves meeting people and sharing stories. So whether you’re looking for tips on how to improve your home or just interested in a lively conversation with an Eastern Shore character, when Hayman is volunteering at the ReStore you’re sure to find a healthy dose of both!

Greg Horsey recognized as Habitat's top volunteer!
June 10, 2010

Maryland Delegate Jim Mathias congratulates Greg Horsey on his Volunteer Service Award on Saturday, June 5 at Habitat's annual volunteer appreciation picnic.

Habitat for Humanity of Wicomico County is extremely proud of its most involved volunteer of 2009, eighteen-year-old Greg Horsey of Salisbury. With 525 hours of service under his belt from August through December 2009, and 674 to date, Greg surpassed the second greatest volunteer by a whopping 87 hours. Greg says when he heard that he was the top volunteer for the entire Wicomico County Habitat affiliate, he was speechless. He first became involved with Habitat through the Telemon job-training program, which pays its employees to participate in local non-profit organizations while they search for other employment. When the job-training program ended in December, Greg continued contributing great portions of his time working at Habitat’s ReStore in Salisbury without pay. The ReStore sells new and slightly-used building supplies, furniture, and appliances at greatly reduced prices to raise money for Habitat for Humanity of Wicomico County. In the ReStore, Greg works in the warehouse and helps organize donations, but says his favorite part of volunteering lies in the strong spirit of teamwork he’s found among his fellow volunteers and Habitat employees. This bond encourages him to follow through with volunteering, even as he continues to search for a job. Greg is a truly selfless individual with a strong sense of responsibility. He shared, “I just want to show people that you can’t blame things on where you came from. I come from one of the worst neighborhoods in Salisbury, and I’m still out here trying to give back.” Habitat is very grateful for the part this devoted and positive young man has played in betterment of this community.
