Habitat For Humanity Of Wicomico County
Volunteer Now

Our most urgent volunteer needs:
         ReStore Volunteers
Family Support Committee Volunteers to mentor family partners

Habitat For Humanity of Wicomico County is a volunteer-driven organization . We welcome people from all walks of life to join us as we build simple, decent, affordable houses in partnership with God and families in need. Though the vast majority have no construction experience or building skills, volunteers are involved in most phases of construction . By working side-by-side with families who will live in their homes, volunteers experience for themselves the joy created when a family is able to realize their dream of home ownership.

In addition to construction, we need volunteers to help in our ReStore , our retail operation that diverts donated and gently-used building materials and appliances from the landfill by selling them at deep discounts.  Proceeds from our ReStore help us build more homes.

Volunteers also perform important work on committees  that manage many of the affiliate's activities.  Committees typically meet once a month with members performing work in between meetings.

Finance Committee : Ensures the organization financial stability by providing oversight across all areas of the organization including but not limited to:  Review of monthly Treasurer report, policies for handling funds, mortgage preparation and delinquency, annual audit and annual budget.

Family Selection Committee  : Works to carry out the board’s vision by defining the population in need of decent, affordable housing, and by developing processes and policies for selecting those in greatest need.  Once the application process has been approved, this group will work with families who have applied, making sure that the seemingly impossible dream for many applicant families a reality.

Family Support Committee  : This committee seeks to welcome new families into the Habitat family and to provide them with a mutual support system, educational opportunities and a forum for discussions regarding homeownership and relevant Habitat policies and procedures.  A member from this committee will be assigned as a family friend helping the family to stay on track with classes, sweat equity and closing costs.  Assistance is also provided for choices concerning the construction of their home and procedures for maintenance after occupancy.

Development Committee  :  Assumes leadership for implementing the long range strategic plans to insure the fiscal needs of this affiliate are met.  Members identify and approach potential donors for either cash or gifts of material, labor, or property.  They also develop fundraising material and help with grant writing.

Public Relations/Special Events :  Plans and coordinates all fundraising and public awareness events and publicity.  They are responsible for sharing Habitat’s mission with the people in the geographical service area and volunteers.  Public relations duties include writing for newsletters, newspapers, advertising for special events, and public speaking.   A subcommittee may be formed to design and implement fundraising events.

Interfaith Relations Committee : Seeks to strengthen the support of the affiliate’s work by gaining volunteers, prayers, and financial support from all the community’s houses of worship.  The members will seek opportunities to give presentations at church services and group meetings.  Information developed to be included in weekly programs.

Site Selection Committee : Works to define neighborhoods and communities where the affiliate should work and finds available land to build on in those areas.  Tasks include working with city offices, neighborhood associations, and property owners.

Construction Committee : Works with the Site Selection Committee to define the type of construction that best fits the needs of the local community and Habitat’s goals.  The committee proposes guideline to the Board for the type of construction work that the affiliate will do, dealing specifically with the house design criteria, materials, plans, energy-efficiency and cost estimates.

Join volunteers from all walks of life from across the community who are making decent, affordable housing for families a matter of conscience and action.
